🔥 Heat Wave with Chickens

June is a wonderful month for humankind alike; but if you were a chicken, you may not be thinking of such a thought. My sumptuous hen Mocha, if you would dare say, is currently sitting on eggs that are to hatch some time around 21-22 June. However, a heat wave may stop her from hatching the baby chicks.

In the summer of 2021, Mocha was once sitting on eggs, though a heat wave came—the temperatures reaching up to 88-9 degrees, I would say. Mocha found it to be too hot for her to be warming up eggs in a nesting box, so, simply, she got up and stopped sitting on them. Now, in the summer of 2022 with heat waves starting to form, I am awfully worried about Mocha. Possibilities are that, if she would continue sitting on the eggs no matter the heat, she would overheat - and if she doesn’t do that, I’m afraid she will leave the eggs again. In spite of that, this heat wave will reach up to 100 degrees.

In order to provide care for the chickens during treacherous weathers, I will have to visit them much more than I would usually do on a daily basis. I recommend that, if anyone here has chickens and an upcoming heat wave, you place a large bowl—though not too large if you have baby chicks and/or younger pullets, as they could drown in it—of ice cold water for them to drink out; sometimes they like to walk inside the cold water. Watching your chickens is another important thing to do during a heat wave. If you do so, you can spot out any odd behaviors that could be caused by overheating.
